Over the last few weeks I’ve been reading quite a lot of books to stop me going completely mad!
The Innocent Man, John Grisham, is a really good book. It’s a true story about a guy who spent a long time on death row even though he was innocent. There are some people who don’t come out looking too good, and it’s worth searching the web once you’ve read it to hear the other side of the story and come to your own conclusions. My opinion? I think there are almost certainly areas where Grisham has taken some licence, but I’m convinced that the District Attorney, Bill Peterson, did some bad stuff. I’m, sadly, also aware that Grisham chose this instance, but there are probably tens more all across the states, so his crusade against Oklahoma is probably slightly overdone.
Playing for Pizza, John Grisham, is an easy read. I love John Grisham novels, but this one is a nice book with nice characters where nothing really happens. I was bothered by the fact that everyone arrives and departs from Milan on the Eurostar (which is typically American lack of understanding how Europe works), and the book is mostly about American Football which means there is loads in it that made no sense to me at all. But, if you’ve got nothing better to do it’s worth a read.
The Ghost, Robert Harris. I only recently discovered Robert Harris through reading Pompeii which is a brilliant book. The Ghost is similarly really really good! It’s about a guy who ghost writes the memoirs of the ex-primeminister, Adam Lang (clearly meant to be Tony Blair). It’s gripping and exciting and you’ll want to keep turning the pages until it’s done, I promise!
